Arctic Explorer and Naval Officer
English explorer and naval officer, Sir Henry Kellett led an expedition in search of Sir John Franklin from 1851-1852.
Kellett's Expedition
As the leader of the expedition, Kellett discovered the Bellot Strait, which he used to navigate westward towards Prince of Wales Island. He sailed around the island to Cape Walker but mistakenly believed that Peel Sound, to the south of the Bellot Strait, was closed, preventing him from exploring further south where he might have encountered Franklin's ships.
Return and Publication
Kellett returned to England without finding Franklin or his crew. He published his expedition's account in "A Short Narrative of the Second Voyage of the Prince Albert in Search of Sir John Franklin" in 1853.
Legacy
Kellett's Arctic expedition remained significant in the search for Franklin. His discoveries and observations contributed to the ongoing efforts to locate the missing explorer and his men.
