William Nelson was born on September 11, 1984, in Bakersfield, California. He attended Taft Union High School, where he excelled in multiple sports from an early age. Initially, Nelson focused on football and track, but after plateauing in football, his high school coach encouraged him to specialize in track and field.

He became one of the university's top distance runners, earning the seventh place in the NCAA Outdoors Championship in 2003.
