Early Life and Education
Arthur William Patrick Albert, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, was the third son of Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Prince Albert. He was born on June 26, 1902, at Buckingham Palace in London, England.
Military Career
Service in Egypt and IndiaArthur joined the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in 1866. He then embarked on a distinguished military career, serving in the British Army. In 1882, he commanded a division in Egypt and subsequently participated in campaigns in India from 1883 to 1885.
Command Positions
From 1886 to 1890, Arthur served as Commander-in-Chief of the Bombay Army. In 1900, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief in Ireland.
German General-Field Marshal
On September 9, 1906, Arthur was awarded the rank of General-Field Marshal in the German Army.
British Field Marshal
Arthur was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal in the British Army on June 26, 1902.
Governor General of Canada
In 1911, Arthur was appointed Governor General of Canada. He served in this role from October 13, 1911, to November 11, 1916.
Personal Life
Marriage to Princess Louise Margaret of PrussiaOn March 13, 1879, Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. They had three children:

Prince Arthur of Connaught (1883-1938)Princess Patricia of Connaught (1886-1974)
Succession to the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha
In 1900, Arthur's elder brother, Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, died without issue. This made Arthur the heir presumptive to the throne of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. However, he renounced his rights to the throne in favor of his nephew, Charles Edward, Duke of Albany.
Death and Legacy
Arthur died at Bagshot Park, Surrey, England, on January 16, 1942. His titles passed to his grandson, Alastair Windsor, Earl of Sussex. Upon Alastair's death in 1943, the Duchy of Connaught and Strathearn became extinct.
