Early Life and Education

William Randolph Hearst III was born as the eldest son of William Randolph Hearst Jr. and grandson of the renowned newspaper publisher and founder of Hearst Corporation, William Randolph Hearst. Hearst III graduated from Harvard University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics.

Hearst Corporation Career

San Francisco Examiner Editor and Publisher

After graduating, Hearst III initially worked at the Hearst Corporation in a junior role. He eventually rose through the ranks and was appointed Editor and Publisher of the San Francisco Examiner, similar to the path taken by his grandfather.

Departure and Return

In 1976, Hearst III left the company to serve as Editor-in-Chief of Outside magazine. However, he returned to the family business in 1980 to continue publishing newspapers.

Executive Roles

In 1992, Hearst III once again departed from the company but remained on the Board of Directors. From 1996 onwards, he co-founded the @Home Network Broadband Internet and other communications companies.

Other Ventures

Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers

Since 1995, Hearst III has been a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a venture capital firm.

Hearst III serves on the Board of Directors of several companies, including Hearst-Argyle Television and Juniper Networks.

Personal Life

Family

Hearst III is a married father of four children: William Dedalus Hearst, Adelaide, Carolina, and Eliza. Carolina and Eliza are accomplished ballet dancers, with the former performing with the San Francisco Ballet while attending college and the latter attending Hamlin School for Girls.
