Winfried Langner: The Octogenarian Tractor Adventurer from Germany

Winfried Langner's solitary expedition, spanning 1.5 months, took him through Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia before reaching his destination: St. Petersburg. His humble trailer simply bore the inscription, "Great Russian Tour 2017."
The Traveling Machine
What made this adventure remarkable was Langner's choice of transport: a 1961 Deutz tractor with a small recreational trailer attached. The sputtering green machine, adorned with red wheels, attracted a curious crowd upon its arrival in St. Petersburg. As Langner parked in front of the Tauride Garden, journalists rushed to greet him, while German Deputy General Consul Stefan Kordash welcomed him personally.
A Different Navigation System
Remarkably, Langner relied solely on a paper map to navigate the unfamiliar roads. Lacking GPS or language skills, he relied on the kindness of strangers, who often understood his international language of gestures. During one stop at a camping site in Kaliningrad, a Russian woman invited him to Siberia, though he wisely declined after consulting his map.
A Lifetime of Passion
Before his retirement, Langner had worked as a mechanic specializing in construction equipment. He had purchased the Deutz tractor, affectionately named "Roberto" by his granddaughter, from a farmer and meticulously restored it. A teddy bear talisman kept him company for 14 years, while the camper trailer offered minimal amenities: a cot and a fridge.
Arrival in St. Petersburg
Upon arriving in St. Petersburg, Langner presented the German consul with the flag of Lower Saxony. In return, he received a guidebook showcasing the city's attractions. After the exchange, police officers arrived and instructed Langner to properly park his tractor, which he promptly did before returning to the crowd to share his tales of adventure.
A Journey of a Lifetime
Despite his advanced age, Langner remained unwavering in his commitment to his adventures. He had previously traveled through Switzerland, Spain, and Norway. Although he had originally planned a route to South America, his doctor advised against it. With his tractor capable of only 18 kilometers per hour, Langner's leisurely journeys allowed him to connect with people and revel in the scenery.
A Refusal to Conform
Langner declared that he would not trade his tractor travels for any form of faster or more comfortable transportation. His spirit of adventure and his unwavering determination continue to inspire those who hear his extraordinary tale.
