Biography of Xiao Gang
Xiao Gang is a Chinese financier and the Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission. He previously held the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank of China.
Early Life
Xiao comes from the Han ethnic group and was born in Changsha, Hunan Province. However, he grew up in Ji'an, Jiangxi Province.
Career
Xiao became Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank of China in August 2004. Prior to that, he served as the President of the bank. He has also held positions such as Chairman of the Bank of China (Hong Kong), Assistant Governor and Deputy Governor of the People's Bank of China, and General Manager of the China Foreign Exchange Trading Center.
In 1996, Xiao obtained a master's degree in International Economic Law from the People's University of China. Before that, he studied at Hunan University and graduated with a bachelor's degree. During his studies, he already worked at the People's Bank of China. Over the course of nearly 15 years, Xiao held various leadership positions, showcasing his talent and skills as a leader.
He progressed from Deputy General Manager to General Manager of the Policy Research Department, General Manager of the China Foreign Exchange Trading Center, and General Manager of the Stock Planning Department. In October 1996, he became Assistant Governor and Deputy Governor of the bank. He held this position for 7 years until March 2003. During this time, he also worked in the Stock Planning Department and the Currency Policy Department of the bank, overseeing the entire Guangdong branch of the People's Bank of China and the state administration network of the stock exchange.
In March 2003, Xiao made a significant career change by leaving the bank and serving as the Chairman, President, and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Bank of China for the next 17 months. His appointment as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank of China in August 2004 was a logical development in his career.
In March 2013, Xiao was appointed Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission. Leaving his position at the Bank of China, he set himself a new and ambitious goal. His task now is to restore confidence in one of the largest stock markets in Asia, which has been performing poorly over the past three years.
Xiao's appointment as Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission is part of China's transition under the new government of Premier Li Keqiang. Keqiang has stated that China's promising economy, currently the world's second-largest, must rely more on market forces, making it a key priority.
