Biography of Sun Huyna
Sun Huyna is a Chinese athlete, a track and field athlete, representing the Shandong Club. She was born on February 25, 1984, in a family of farmers in Weifang, Shandong province, China. She started her training at the Weifang City Sports School with weight characteristics of 50 kg and height of 1.66 m. Her sports coach in school was Chi Yuzhai. Sun continued her education at the Shandong Technological Sports Institute in 1999. Her sports coach at the institute was Yin Yanqin.
Early Career
In 2002, Sun was selected for the national team after running the distance of 1500m in 4:10.43 and 5000m in 14:56.15 at the 2001 National Chinese Games. Her coach in the national team was Wang Dexian.
International Success
In 2002, Sun won the bronze medal in the 10,000m race at the Busan Asian Games with a time of 31:42.36. In 2003, she set a new junior world record (previous record: 30:31.55) in a memorable 10,000m race at the World Championships in Saint-Denis.
In 2004, Sun won the gold medal in the 10,000m race at the Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, with a time of 30:24.36. She caught up with Ethiopian runner Ejagayehu Dibaba right at the finish line to claim the first place this time. In Helsinki, Sun finished fifth in the women's 5000m race (14:43.64) and fourth in the women's 10,000m race (30:27.18). Both events were won by Ethiopian athletes.
Controversies and Setbacks
In October 2005, Sun Yingjie, another Chinese athlete, won the bronze medal in the 10,000m race at the World Championships, but her doping test came back positive. As a result, the national coach of the women's long-distance running team, Wang Dexian, was suspended from his duties for two years.
The selection of a new coach for Sun Huyna took until August 2006 when Yin Yanqin, a coach from the Shandong Institute, was chosen. Sun's unofficial personal best in the 1500m race is 4:03.00, which she achieved at the Chinese National Games. However, her victory in this race was not officially recognized due to accusations from competitor Liu Qing, who complained of intentional blocking by Sun when Liu tried to overtake her.
