Early Life and Education
Yakov Naumenko, a renowned Belarusian Soviet musician, was born into a musical environment. During his school years, he excelled as a leader in school productions and pursued music education by enrolling in a music school, specializing in the accordion. Despite entering the Sevastopol Instrument Engineering Institute, Naumenko left after his first year and completed his compulsory military service in the Soviet Navy in Sevastopol.
Musical Career
Naumenko's musical journey took a significant turn when he enrolled in the Minsk Music College, where he deepened his fascination with folk music. He furthered his studies at the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of renowned musicians such as Iosif Kobzon, Lev Leshchenko, Gelena Velikanova, and Nina Meshko.
Naumenko's talent blossomed as a member of the folk music ensemble "Svyata" and later as the founder of his own ensemble, "Byaseda." His captivating performances as a soloist with the State Orchestra of Symphonic and Variety Music of the Republic of Belarus, the National Academic Folk Orchestra of the Republic of Belarus named after I. Zhinovich, and the Presidential Orchestra of the Republic of Belarus under the direction of Viktor Babarikin left an indelible mark on the music scene.
Tragic Demise
Naumenko's life was tragically cut short on August 19, 2012, when he suffered a severe head injury during an altercation in the center of Sevastopol. Despite undergoing a craniotomy, he succumbed to his injuries on August 26 in a Sevastopol hospital. His untimely passing sent shockwaves through the Belarusian and international music communities.

Yakov Naumenko's legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of Belarusians. His vibrant and soulful renditions of songs such as "Byvaytse Zdarovy," "Aksamitki," "Zaruchonyya," "Gulyay, Kazak," and "Nado Prosto Zhit" have become timeless classics. Composers such as Oleg Eliseenkov, Oleg Molchan, Leonid Zakhlevny, Vladimir Budnik, and Vasily Rainchik collaborated with Naumenko on songs penned by renowned poets Alexander Legchilov, Leonid Dranko-Maisuk, and Elena Turova.
Honors and Recognitions
Naumenko's extraordinary contributions to Belarusian music were recognized through numerous awards and honors. In 1988, he won the prestigious "Novye Imena" competition. He was bestowed with the title of Meritorious Artist of the Republic of Belarus in 1997 and was awarded the Order of Francysk Skaryna in 2009. The pinnacle of his recognition came in 2011 when he was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Republic of Belarus.
Personal Life
Yakov Naumenko was survived by his wife, Anna Yakovlevna, and children: Tikhon, a fifth-year student at the Belarusian State University's Institute of Journalism; Veronika, a journalist with Euronews in Lyon; and two grandchildren.
