Early Life and Career

Yacov Vladimirovich Smushkevich was born in Rokiškis, Lithuania, to a Jewish family. He joined the Communist Party in 1918 and fought on the Western Front during the Russian Civil War.

Rise as an Aviator

In 1931, Smushkevich graduated from the Kachin Military Aviation School and became the commissar of an aviation brigade based in Vitebsk. Under his leadership, the brigade became one of the best units in the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army Air Forces (VVS RKKA).

Spanish Civil War

From 1936 to 1937, Smushkevich served as a senior aviation advisor to the Republican government in Spain. He played a crucial role in organizing and training the Spanish Air Force, earning respect and admiration for his bravery and combat skills. In 1937, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for his valor.

Battle of Khalkhin Gol

After returning from Spain, Smushkevich took command of the Soviet Air Force units fighting against Japanese forces at Khalkhin Gol in 1939. Under his leadership, the VVS RKKA achieved decisive aerial superiority and contributed to the Soviet victory.

Chief of the VVS RKKA

In 1939, Smushkevich was appointed Chief of the VVS RKKA. During the Winter War with Finland, he identified significant flaws in the organization and training of the army aviation.

Fall from Grace

In 1940, Smushkevich was awarded the rank of Lieutenant General of Aviation. However, in 1941, he was arrested on suspicion of treason and sentenced to death.

Execution and Rehabilitation

Smushkevich was executed by firing squad in 1941. In 1954, he was posthumously rehabilitated.
