Education and Career

Ignacy Władysław Byczkowski was born in Troškūnai, Lithuania. After graduating from high school in 1822, he studied medicine at the University of Vilnius, which he completed in 1827. However, due to health reasons, he did not pass the final exams. He then traveled to Europe to further his medical education.

In 1831, Byczkowski became a practicing physician in Warsaw. He returned to Vilnius in 1835 and passed the medical exams at the Vilnius Medico-Surgical Academy, receiving his medical diploma in 1842. He then worked as a doctor in Vilnius.

Cultural Contributions

In addition to his medical career, Byczkowski was an avid collector of antiques and artwork. He was instrumental in the restoration of the Chapel of Saint Hyacinth in 1843. He also became a member of the Vilnius Archaeological Commission.

"Vilnius Album"

Byczkowski's most notable contribution was the publication of the "Vilnius Album" ("Album de Wilna") between 1842 and 1875. This series of lithographic prints depicted the city of Vilnius, its surroundings, and its cultural heritage. The originals for the lithographs were created by renowned artists such as Albert Žamett, Vasily Sadovnikov, Michał Elviro Andriolli, and others. The lithographs were executed by skilled French artists such as Adolphe Bayot, Philippe Benoist, and François Grenier.

Legacy

Byczkowski's "Vilnius Album" is not only a testament to his passion for his city but also an invaluable historical record. The album preserves the images of buildings and monuments that no longer exist or have been significantly altered. Byczkowski was a prominent figure in Vilnius culture and his contributions continue to be celebrated. He is buried at the Rasos Cemetery in Vilnius.
