Biography of Yang Xinhai
Yang Xinhai, also known as Wang Ganggang, Yang Liu, and Yang Zhiya, was a Chinese serial killer who confessed to committing 65 murders and 23 rapes between 1999 and 2003. He was widely known as the "Monster Killer" in the media.

Early Life
Yang Xinhai was born on July 29, 1968, in Zhumadian, Zhengyang County, Henan Province, China. His family was one of the poorest in their village. As the youngest of four children, Xinhai was a smart but introverted boy. He dropped out of school in 1985 and at the age of seventeen, he decided not to return home. Instead, he embarked on a journey across China, surviving as a hired laborer.
Previous Crimes
In 1988 and 1991, Xinhai was sentenced to labor camps for theft in Xi'an, Shaanxi, and Shijiazhuang, Hebei. During this time, he scouted locations for his future killings, often traveling by bicycle. He operated in the provinces of Anhui, Hebei, Henan, and Shandong.
Crimes and Capture
Xinhai would break into the homes of his victims in the evenings and kill all the occupants, primarily targeting farmers. He used tools such as axes, hammers, and shovels. Occasionally, he would murder entire families. After each crime, Xinhai would change his clothes and shoes.
In October 2002, Xinhai killed a six-year-old girl and her father using a shovel. He also sexually assaulted a pregnant woman, causing her serious head injuries. Xinhai was apprehended on November 3, 2003, when he aroused suspicion during a routine inspection of entertainment centers in Cangzhou, Hebei. When brought in for questioning, it was discovered that he was wanted for murders in four different provinces.
Confession and Sentencing
Soon after his arrest, Xinhai confessed to 65 murders, 23 rapes, and 5 assaults resulting in serious injuries. Of these crimes, 49 murders and 17 rapes were committed in Henan, 8 murders and 3 rapes in Hebei, 6 murders and 2 rapes in Anhui, and 2 murders and 1 rape in Shandong. DNA evidence linked Xinhai to several crime scenes.
Xinhai was found guilty on February 1, 2004, and sentenced to death. At the time of his sentencing, he was labeled by China's official media as the most terrifying and long-operating killer in the region. He was executed on February 14, 2004, by a gunshot to the back of the head.
Motives
Although Xinhai did not officially disclose his motives, he stated, "When I killed people, I had a strong desire to kill more. This inspired me to seek other victims. I didn't care whether they deserved to live or not. It didn't bother me. I have no desire to be a part of society. Society is not my concern." Some reports suggest that Xinhai began killing as revenge against society after his girlfriend left him upon learning about his past convictions for theft and rape. Other reports claimed that he committed his crimes simply because he enjoyed them.
