Yannick Borel, a French épée fencer, was born on November 5, 1988, in Pointe-à-Pitre, a city located in the overseas region of France. He began fencing at the age of 10 and made his debut in international competitions in 2009.
Early Successes
In 2011, Yannick achieved his first major success by winning a gold medal in the team championship at the European Championships. He then went on to become the world champion in team épée. However, he did not have the opportunity to compete in the team event at the Olympic Games in London, and his French team finished second in the team tournament at the World Championships.
Challenges and Comeback
In the individual event, Yannick made it to the quarter-finals but ultimately lost to Bartosz Piasecki of Norway, winning 6-2 in the first bout but conceding a decisive hit in the fight for a medal. He took a break from international competitions for the next two seasons.
After his hiatus, Yannick returned to the elite level of épée fencing in 2015, winning the team event at the European Games. In 2016, he made a triumphant comeback by becoming the absolute champion of Europe, winning gold medals in both the individual and team championships.
