Early Life and Theatrical Beginnings

Born into a humble peasant family, Volodymyr Bortnyk's early years were shaped by his passion for music and the stage. He moved to Ternopil with his family, where he attended Ukrainian gymnasium and pursued his theatrical interests.

Joining Les Kurbas' "Ternopolian Theatrical Evenings"

Inspired by Les Kurbas' "Ternopolian Theatrical Evenings," Bortnyk abandoned his studies to pursue his theatrical ambitions. He performed in plays by renowned Ukrainian playwrights, showcasing his early talent.

Collaboration with Les Kurbas in "Berezil"

During the revolutionary period, Bortnyk joined Kurbas' renowned "Berezyl" theater in Kyiv, where he honed his skills as a stage director. He played an integral role in the theater's renowned productions.

Establishment of the "Vesely Proletarian"

In 1926, Bortnyk relocated with "Berezyl" to Kharkiv. His work in this period demonstrated his maturity as a director. He established the "Vesely Proletarian" theater, a small-scale venue dedicated to innovative productions.

Leadership of Various Theaters

Bortnyk's career continued with leadership roles at the Kharkiv Theater of Musical Comedy, the Dnipropetrovsk Theater named after Taras Shevchenko, and the Kharkiv Theater of Revolution.

Arrest and Rehabilitation

Tragically, Bortnyk's promising career was cut short in 1937 when he was arrested on charges of nationalism and subsequently executed. He was later rehabilitated in 1960, recognizing the injustice of his fate.
