Tan Dun was born into a family of musicians in China. At the tender age of four, he began his musical journey under the tutelage of his father, a renowned composer. Tan's childhood was marked by turmoil when his father became a target of persecution during the Cultural Revolution. At the age of 11, his father attempted suicide, leading to his banishment to a remote village.

Rural Labor and Artistic Aspiration

Despite the hardships he faced, Tan continued to pursue his musical aspirations. He worked in the countryside and later in a factory in the city. While performing menial labor, he nurtured his passion for composition.

Western Education and International Acclaim

In 1980, Tan's life took a transformative turn as he enrolled in the prestigious Cambridge University to study music. He later attended the Eastman School of Music in 1987, where he honed his skills under the guidance of renowned composers such as Joseph Schwantner, Louis Andriessen, and Alexander Goehr.
