The Early Life and Education of Yi Xing

Yi Xing, a prominent Chinese astronomer, mathematician, engineer, and Buddhist monk, was born into an official's family in 673 AD during the Tang Dynasty. As a child, he delved into the teachings of Taoism, penning two works on its philosophies. However, at the age of twenty-one, he embraced Chan Buddhism, becoming a disciple of the renowned master Pujie. Yi Xing further immersed himself in the monastic codes and meditative practices of Tiantai Buddhism.

Embracing Esoteric Buddhism and Sanskrit Scholarship

In 716, Yi Xing settled in Chang'an, the Tang Dynasty capital, where he encountered the eminent Buddhist monk Shubhakarasimha. A profound scholar of Sanskrit and translator of Buddhist sutras, Shubhakarasimha became Yi Xing's mentor. Together, they embarked on the translation of the Mahavairocana-sutra, a collaboration that spanned eight years. During this time, Yi Xing cultivated a close bond with another illustrious monk-translator, Vajrabodhi. His association with Vajrabodhi deepened his understanding of the religious-philosophical tenets outlined in the Vajra-shekhara-sutra.

Scientific Contributions and Astronomical Innovations

Beyond his Buddhist scholarship, Yi Xing made significant contributions to science. His extensive knowledge of Sanskrit opened the doors to the vast scientific corpus of India, which he eagerly embraced. In 724-725, he conducted geodetic measurements to determine the length of a meridian arc, employing a method similar to that used by Eratosthenes in the 3rd century BC. These measurements were crucial for refining astronomical models, predicting solar eclipses, and implementing calendar reforms.

In collaboration with Liang Lingzan, Yi Xing devised an innovative cylindrical astrolabe, featuring seven rings including the celestial latitude ring. In 725, they constructed a bronze celestial globe, an astronomical timepiece that represented a groundbreaking synthesis of scientific instrument and clock. Powered by water, the globe completed a revolution in one day, accurately tracking the celestial bodies. It featured moving orbs representing the Sun and Moon, which rotated in opposing directions at different speeds, mimicking their actual motion. Clockwork mechanisms connected to the globe enabled automatic striking of a drum every quarter hour and a bell each hour.

Imperial Patronage and Legacy

Yi Xing's later years were spent as the court astronomer for Emperor Xuanzong. According to the renowned Japanese monk Kukai, the emperor held Yi Xing in such high esteem that he personally composed an epitaph for his tomb upon his passing. Despite his remarkable achievements, Yi Xing was not recognized as one of the eight patriarchs of esoteric Buddhism but was revered as one of the "eight dharma-holding patriarchs." His contributions to science and astronomy continue to garner admiration from modern scholars.
