A Poet Among Us

A renowned poet, Yunna Moritz, resides amidst us. Her verses, familiar to all, are sung and recited by heart. Moritz defines her readership as children from 5 to 500 years old.

Defying Expectations

Despite being denied admission to the journalism faculty in her hometown of Kyiv, Moritz pursued a philology degree at Kyiv University. She later enrolled in the Literary Institute in Moscow, where she faced expulsion for "unhealthy sentiments in her work." Nonetheless, she achieved prominence as one of Russia's greatest poets.

Censorship and Isolation

Moritz's work was met with censorship and blacklisting. She was denied travel abroad, even to conferences dedicated to her poetry. Yet, she held numerous readings at the Polytechnic Museum, a hallowed sanctuary for Russian poetry.

International Acclaim

Despite the obstacles, Moritz's work gained international recognition. She has been translated into all major European languages, as well as Japanese, Chinese, and Turkish. She refuses to appear in anthologies of "women's poetry," arguing that she is not a female poet but simply a poet.

The Poet's Craft

Moritz wields language with audacity and sensitivity. She invents words to express the inexpressible, such as "lubli," a measure of the reader's gratitude for her verses. She labors tirelessly, driven by her "Lesson."

The Gift of Harmony

Through personal tragedy and loss, Moritz has found harmony. Her profound empathy resonates with countless readers. She finds solace in the night, where she creates poetry and drawings that transcend the human realm.
