Early Life and Education
Yuri de Bur was born on May 2, 1887, in Baku, to a family immersed in the arts. His father was a sea captain, while his mother was a gifted pianist and music teacher.
Young Yuri received his formal education at the St. Petersburg Commercial School (1897-1905) and the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied piano (1903-1906). He subsequently honed his acting skills at the Kharkov Dramatic Studio of Andrei Petrovsky (1912-1916).
Career in the Russian Empire
Prior to his emigration, de Bur held various roles in the theater world of the Russian Empire. He served as a pianist-reпетиtor at theatrical schools in St. Petersburg and Moscow (1907-1910) and became the actor and head of the music department of the St. Petersburg Club of Artists, Writers, and Actors (1910-1912). He also graced the stages of prestigious dramatic theaters in Moscow, Petrograd, and Kharkov.
Emigration to Latvia
In the early 1920s, de Bur decided to leave his homeland for Latvia. From 1924 until his death, he remained a dedicated member of the Russian Drama Theater in Riga.
Personal Life
De Bur had two marriages. His first wife was the actress and singer Elsa de Bur, and his second wife was the actress Ekaterina Bunchuk.
Legacy
Yuri de Bur passed away on February 18, 1949, in Riga. He was laid to rest at the Pokrovsky Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy as a talented and dedicated actor who made significant contributions to the Latvian theater scene.
