Early Life and Education
Armenian politician and statesman Karen Karapetyan was born in Armenia. In 1958, he graduated from the Armenian Agricultural Academy, specializing in hydromelioration. He obtained a Candidate of Technical Sciences degree.
Political Career
1959-1986: Progress in YerevanKarapetyan embarked on his career in the executive committee of Yerevan, where he rose through the ranks. He served as deputy head of the housing department, deputy chairman, and eventually chairman of the communal service. From 1978 to 1986, he held the position of first vice-mayor of Yerevan.
1986-1997: Ministerial Roles
From 1986 to 1990, Karapetyan served as Minister of Water Resources and Melioration of the Armenian SSR. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he held various positions in the Ministry of Agriculture of Armenia, including Minister (1991), First Deputy Minister, and Advisor to the Minister.
Post-Soviet Career
1997-2014: Leadership in the Water SectorKarapetyan became the General Director of the Armenian Water Project Institute (Armvodproject) in 1997. He remained in this role until 2014.
2014-Present: Focus on Environmental Conservation
Since December 2014, Karapetyan has served as the Director of the Fund for Forest Restoration and Development. He has also been actively involved in environmental protection, holding various positions such as Deputy Chairman of the Lake Sevan Commission under the President of Armenia.
Other Engagements
Karapetyan has been a member of the Public Council of Armenia since August 2018. He has participated in the National Assembly of the Armenian SSR from 1976 to 1991.
Recognition
Karapetyan has received numerous awards for his contributions, including the Medal "For Services to the Fatherland" 1st degree (2016) and the Order "Anania Shirakatsi."
