Anatoliy Koval: A Ukrainian Footballing Legend
Early Life and InjuryAnatoliy Koval was born in Dilijan, Armenia, but grew up in Kirovohrad, Ukraine. His love for football blossomed from a tender age, but a devastating injury ended his playing career prematurely. After undergoing four surgeries, Koval was forced to retire from professional football.
Coaching Career Beginnings
Despite his injury, Koval's passion for the game remained. He worked at the Kirovohrad Oblast Sports Committee while coaching a factory team in regional competitions. In 1980, he relocated to Oleksandriia and became a youth coach at the local sports school, where he remained until 1991.
Rise to Prominence
In 1992, Koval was appointed head coach of Oleksandriia's Polifhraftekhnika, a team formed from former youth players. Under his guidance, the team ascended from amateur competitions to the Second League of the USSR Championship. After the Soviet Union's dissolution, the club earned promotion to the Ukrainian First League.
Success with Zvezda and Zorya
Koval later worked with various Ukrainian clubs. His breakthrough came with Kirovohrad's Zvezda, which he led to the First League championship in 2003, earning promotion to the Ukrainian Premier League. In 2004, he was hired by Luhansk's Zorya, an underdog in the First League. Within a year, he assembled a competitive team that narrowly missed promotion due to financial constraints. The following season, Zorya achieved an impressive victory in the First League, but Koval was dismissed early in the subsequent season due to perceived lack of experience in the Premier League.
Return to Zorya and Sporting Director Role
Koval briefly coached Ternopil's Nyva and PFC Oleksandriia before returning to Zorya in 2009. He remained with the club until the arrival of Anatoliy Chantsov. Since the beginning of 2010, Koval has held the position of sporting director at FC Zorya. After Chantsov's departure in late 2011, Koval assisted acting head coach Yuriy Vernydub.
