Yuri Yankelevich: Soviet Violinist and Educator
Early Life and Musical EducationYuri Yankelevich was born on December 5, 1909, in Omsk, Siberia. At a young age, he began studying violin at the music classes of the Omsk Philharmonic Society under Alexander Berlin. He also made his debut as a soloist during this time.
In 1923, Yankelevich enrolled at the Petrograd Conservatory, where he studied under Ivan Nalbandian. Four years later, he transferred to the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied with Alexander Yampolsky. He graduated in 1932 and continued his studies in the conservatory's postgraduate program.
Teaching Career
Yankelevich began teaching at the Central Music School in 1934. He also taught at the music college affiliated with the Moscow Conservatory and later became a professor at the conservatory itself in 1961.
Pedagogical Influence
As a teacher, Yankelevich had a profound impact on his students. His pedagogical approach prioritized intuition and emotional understanding. He would often recite poetry during lessons to evoke a sense of inspiration and empathy in his students.

Performance and Writing
In addition to his teaching, Yankelevich performed as part of the Moscow Conservatory's string quartet. He also wrote articles on performance techniques and theory and arranged several pieces for violin.
Legacy
Yuri Yankelevich passed away on February 28, 1973. His legacy continues through his students and his writings. Since 2009, the city of Omsk has hosted the Yuri Yankelevich International Violin Competition in his honor.
