Early Life and Education

François-Gérard Grout was born in 1931 and initially pursued a degree in philosophy at the University of Nancy from 1949 to 1955. Concurrently, he studied piano at the university's conservatory while concurrently studying musicology at the Sorbonne under Jacques Chailley and the Paris Conservatory under Norbert Dufourcq.

Academic Career

Grout's academic career took off in 1975 when he succeeded Norbert Dufourcq as Professor of Musicology and Music History at the Paris Conservatory, a position he held until his retirement in 1997. He also served as President of the French Musicological Society from 1980 to 1983 and as the French representative to the International Musicological Society from 1982 to 1992.

Luigi Boccherini and the Grout Catalogue

François-Gérard Grout rose to prominence in 1969 with the publication of his comprehensive 700-page catalogue of composer Luigi Boccherini's works, a project reportedly subsidized by Germaine de Rothschild. Subsequently, Boccherini's works have been designated with Grout's catalog numbers, preceded by the letter "G", leading Dimitri Markevitch to refer to Grout as the "Köchel of Boccherini" (in analogy to Ludwig Köchel, the author of the foundational catalogue of Mozart's works). Grout later published additional articles on Boccherini and edited an edition of his guitar quintets.

Focus on French Music

Another major area of Grout's research was French music of the mid-19th century, particularly the works of Hector Berlioz and Camille Saint-Saëns. Under Grout's editorship, the fourth volume of the Complete Collected Letters of Berlioz was published in 1983, as well as the collection of his music-critical articles in 1996. Additionally, he edited Saint-Saëns' memoir "Views on My Contemporaries" in 1990.

Collaboration and Legacy

François-Gérard Grout was an active collaborator and served as one of the co-editors of a collection of articles for the 200th anniversary of the Paris Conservatory in 1996. His contributions to musicology have been significant, particularly his work on the cataloguing of Luigi Boccherini's works and his research on French music of the mid-19th century.
