Chinese Swimming Sensation

Zhang Yufei, a prominent Chinese swimmer, excels in both sprint freestyle and butterfly events. Recognized as one of the most promising athletes on the international scene, she has amassed an impressive medal tally of 43 (18 gold, 8 silver, and 17 bronze) throughout her swimming career, spanning Youth Olympic Games, Asian Games, World Championships, and the summer Olympics. Currently, she holds the record for the most Olympic medals won by a female Chinese athlete. In 2023, she was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the women's division at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Early Beginnings

Born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, Zhang's journey into swimming began at the tender age of four, thanks in part to the support and guidance of her mother who served as her personal coach. A mere two years later, she embarked on professional training with the Jiangsu swimming team, where she swiftly established numerous age-group records.

International Debut and Rise to Stardom

As records continued to tumble, Zhang's rapid rise culminated in her major international debut at the age of fourteen. Competing against the likes of 2008 Olympic champion Liu Zige, she emerged victorious in the 200m butterfly at the 2012 FINA Swimming World Cup in Beijing. The following year, she earned a coveted spot on China's national swimming team.

Zhang's international debut came as a member of the host nation at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing. She left an indelible mark, capturing a total of five medals (three gold and two silver). Her breakout performance included a remarkable butterfly split of 58.56 in the women's 4×100m medley relay, propelling her Chinese quartet to a junior world record (4:03.58) and a gold medal triumph. That same evening, she showcased her prowess in the 200m butterfly, securing a silver with a time of 2:08.22, less than two seconds behind Hungarian Liliana Szilagyi. In the women's 4×100m freestyle relay, Zhang clocked a 54.09 in the third leg, as the host nation celebrated another relay victory with a time of 3:41.19. On August 22, Zhang collected her second silver in the 100m butterfly with a time of 57.95, once again trailing Szilagyi by a mere three-tenths of a second. While Zhang and her teammates Li Guangyuan, He Yun, and Yu Hexin narrowly missed out on claiming her first individual gold, they combined efforts to secure another relay title for China in the mixed 4×100m medley relay (3:49.33).

Regional and World Stage Success

Zhang's exceptional talent continued to shine at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. She powered through the third leg with a blistering 54.10 split, propelling the Chinese team to a dominant victory in the women's 4×100m freestyle relay in a time of 3:37.25.

At the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, Zhang showcased her endurance by competing in two finals with a mere forty-minute break on day 5. She began by shattering her own junior world record with a time of 2:06.51, securing an individual bronze in the 200m butterfly. Forty minutes later, Zhang recorded a 1:58.73 in the third leg, helping the Chinese quartet to a bronze medal in the women's 4×200m freestyle relay with a time of 7:49.10.

On August 22, 2018, Zhang captured the gold medal in the women's 200m butterfly at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, with a time of 2:06.61.

Olympic Glory and Record-Breaking Performances

On July 28, 2021, Zhang made history by breaking the Olympic record and world record in the women's 200m butterfly and women's 4×200m freestyle relay, respectively, winning gold in both events.

On July 24, 2023, Zhang emerged victorious in the women's 100m butterfly at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka.
