Zheng Sheng, the Chinese Cyclist Who Rode from Shanghai to London
Zheng Sheng is a 29-year-old Chinese man who cycled from Shanghai to London. He covered 14,000 kilometers and financed the journey on his own after failing to secure sponsorship.
Dream of Exploring Eurasia
Zheng Sheng, a college graduate from Shanghai, always dreamed of cycling across Eurasia. In 2013, at the age of 23, he decided to embark on his ambitious journey. Growing up, he enjoyed cycling, and in 2008, he began undertaking longer cycling expeditions. However, he had never ventured beyond his home country.
Limited Resources
After graduating from college, Zheng Sheng decided it was time to pursue his dream. He quit his job, applied for visas, and planned his transcontinental route. The only major obstacle was a lack of funding. He sought sponsorship but was unable to secure it. Nevertheless, he was determined to embark on his journey and managed to raise approximately $2,000 with the help of his sister and friends.
Start of the Journey
On March 5, 2013, Zheng Sheng set off from Shanghai, full of hope and ready for adventure. His initial enthusiasm waned as he discovered the arduous nature of his journey. Financial constraints became a major challenge, forcing him to subsist on bread in European countries where food and accommodation were beyond his budget. Despite these hardships, he pressed on, cycling approximately 100 kilometers per day.
Challenges Along the Way
Zheng Sheng faced various challenges during his travels. He endured the freezing temperatures of the Russian mountains and suffered from muscle cramps in the Netherlands. He also encountered wolves in the vast Kazakh steppe and had to contend with leaking tents and limited Wi-Fi connectivity.
A Transformative Experience
Despite the difficulties, Zheng Sheng cycled through 11 countries over 136 days: China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and finally, the United Kingdom. He documented his journey on his blog and called his mother at specific times to avoid causing her unnecessary worry. Upon his return, he admitted that experiencing the world firsthand had made him more optimistic and that he had overcome numerous obstacles, both physical and mental.
Inspiration for Others
Zheng Sheng's 14,000-kilometer journey is a testament to the power of human willpower. He encourages others to pursue their dreams regardless of the challenges they may face. He is willing to share his experiences and provide guidance to anyone who aspires to embark on a similar adventure, filled with pedaling, camping, hunger, and the pursuit of dreams.
Life After the Journey
Upon his return to Shanghai, Zheng Sheng resumed his urban life, seeking employment and securing accommodation. He continues to treasure the memories of his journey and plans to embark on future cycling expeditions, possibly conquering another continent. His story serves as an inspiration to all who believe in the transformative power of adventure and the strength of human determination.
