Born into poverty and facing early adversity, Israeli singer Zohar Argov overcame obstacles to establish himself as a beloved musical icon.

Early Life and Career

Born in Rishon LeZion in 1955, Argov grew up in a large and underprivileged family. His musical journey began within the Yemeni religious community, where he honed his vocal skills. His 1981 debut album, "Eleanor," featured the hit tracks "Sod HaMazalot" and "Malah Yaldah," dedicated to his ex-wife Bracha.

The King of Mizrahi Music

Argov became one of the first Mizrahi artists to achieve commercial success. Possessing an extraordinary improvisational ability, his music captivated audiences. Arranger and conductor Nancy Brandes, who collaborated on many of Argov's recordings, described him as a musical genius, capable of "singing the same song in different beautiful ways."

Tragedy and Legacy

In 1987, Argov's career was tragically cut short when he took his own life while in prison on rape charges. His death, which occurred shortly after an appearance on a popular TV talk show where he discussed his personal struggles, sent shockwaves throughout the nation. Argov left behind one son, Gili.
