Early Life and Upbringing
Abigail Leigh Kershaw was born on 12 June 1987, in Melbourne, Australia. Growing up alongside a brother and sister, she spent her childhood in a modestly furnished home where music was absent, and entertainment consisted of three VHS tapes: "Throw Momma from the Train," "Milo & Otis," and "The Little Mermaid."
From a young age, Kershaw exuded a rebellious spirit. She engaged in jiu-jitsu for seven years and possessed the physical prowess to outmatch any boy. Her defiance even led to her expulsion from school.
Due to her family's financial constraints, Kershaw sought employment from her teenage years, working at an amusement park, grocery store, and fast food restaurant.
Modeling Career
In 2004, Kershaw won the Girlfriend Model Search competition, paving the way for a modeling career. She moved to Sydney the following year and was soon scouted by an agent from Chic Management, landing her first catwalk contract.
In 2007, Kershaw joined Next Management and relocated to New York City. She made her runway debut at New York Fashion Week and subsequently graced the catwalks of Milan, Paris, and Miami. She represented notable designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Alexander McQueen, and became a fixture at Chanel shows, opening and closing events, an honor equivalent to an Olympic gold medal in the fashion industry.
Kershaw's modeling career granted her financial stability but also took a toll on her well-being. She endured grueling schedules, malnutrition, and physical injuries. Despite the glamour, she felt a disconnect within the industry.
Transition to Acting
In 2011, Kershaw began experimenting with acting in short films. Her breakout performance came in 2015 as one of Immortan Joe's wives in the post-apocalyptic action film "Mad Max: Fury Road." The role propelled her into Hollywood and ignited her passion for cinema.
Following the film's release, Kershaw dropped her surname, retaining only her first and middle names. In 2016, she portrayed the goddess of war Anat in "Gods of Egypt" and appeared as the aging model Sarah in the thriller "The Neon Demon."
She continued to diversify her filmography with "The Dark Tower" in 2017 and landed her first lead role in the 2019 horror film "Honeymoon."
Television Breakthrough
Kershaw made her small screen debut in the horror-fantasy series "Lovecraft Country." She portrayed the daughter of the secret society leader, replacing Elizabeth Debicki in the role. In preparation, she researched cult upbringing and adolescent development.
Personal Life
Kershaw has had several public relationships. She dated American businessman Andrew Flynn, Australian musician Matthew Hutchinson, and Danish model Freja Beha Erichsen. Rumors of a relationship with Tom Cruise have been denied by both parties.
Kershaw has expressed loneliness in her personal life, attributing it to her height and seemingly intimidating demeanor. She enjoys painting and has exhibited her abstract oil pastel artworks. Her body is adorned with numerous tattoos, including hidden ones on her inner lower lip. She also has piercings in her left nostril, navel, nipple, and ears.
Current Projects
Kershaw's latest acting endeavor is the nine-episode crime drama "Florida Man." Premiering on Netflix in April 2023, the series features her as a woman on the run from a mob boss's girlfriend.
