Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni: Palestinian Nationalist and Martyr
Early Life and Nationalist ActivismAbd al-Qadir al-Husayni was a prominent Palestinian Arab nationalist who played a significant role in the Arab Revolt of 1936-1939. He was born in Jerusalem in 1897 to a respected family. His cousin, Haj Amin al-Husayni, was the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and a leading figure in the Palestinian nationalist movement.
From a young age, Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni dedicated himself to the cause of Palestinian independence. He joined the Arab Club in Jerusalem and became involved in political activities. During the 1920s, he emerged as a key leader in the resistance against British rule in Palestine.
Co-Founder of the Holy War Army
In 1936, Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni co-founded the Holy War Army, a Palestinian paramilitary organization that fought against British forces and Jewish settlements. As its commander, he led numerous attacks and military operations throughout the country.
Unsuccessful Mission to Syria
In 1948, with the Arab-Israeli conflict escalating, Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni traveled to Syria to seek weapons and manpower for the Palestinian cause. However, his mission was unsuccessful, and he returned to Palestine deeply disappointed.
Death at Al-Qastal
On April 8, 1948, Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni led an attack on the Jewish settlement of Al-Qastal during Operation Nachshon. In the early morning hours, he was shot and killed by a Haganah outpost.
His final words were reportedly "Water...," spoken in English. His death dealt a severe blow to the Arab forces, as he was a highly revered and charismatic leader.
Legacy and Impact
Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni's sacrifice became a symbol of Palestinian resistance and nationalism. He is remembered as a martyr who fought valiantly for the cause of his people. His name and image continue to inspire Palestinians in their ongoing struggle for independence.
