Gennady Gaguliya: A Prominent Abkhazian Politician
Early Life and CareerGennady Gaguliya was an Abkhazian political figure who held the position of Prime Minister of Abkhazia on three separate occasions (1995-1997, 2002-2003, 2018). Born in Abkhazia, he graduated from the construction faculty of the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute in 1972.
Early Political Career
From 1973 to 1986, Gaguliya worked in various construction-related roles, including as a construction supervisor and deputy director of the Lake Ritsa Public Catering Plant. In 1986, he became the chairman of the Gudauta District Consumer Cooperative.
In 1991, Gaguliya was appointed Chairman of the State Committee for Foreign Economic Relations of the Council of Ministers of the Abkhazian ASSR. He subsequently served as Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers from 1992 to 1995 and Prime Minister from 1995 to 1997.
Later Career
After his first term as Prime Minister, Gaguliya worked as an assistant to a State Duma deputy. In 2002, he became the head of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Abkhazia. He was reappointed Prime Minister from 2002 to 2003.
From 2003 to 2004, Gaguliya served as Head of the Administration of the President of Abkhazia. He returned to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Abkhazia in 2005.
Third Term as Prime Minister
On April 25, 2018, Gaguliya was reappointed Prime Minister of Abkhazia. He held this position until his untimely death in September 2018.
Tragedy and Legacy
On September 8, 2018, Gennady Gaguliya was killed in a tragic car accident on the Pso-Ingur highway. He was on his way back from an official visit to Syria. He was buried on September 12, 2018, in his hometown of Lykhny.
Gennady Gaguliya was a respected and influential figure in Abkhazian politics. He dedicated his life to serving his people and played a key role in shaping the country's economic and political development. His legacy continues to inspire Abkhazians today.
Family
Gaguliya was married to Zaida Otyrba and had two children, a daughter named Asida and a son named Astamur. He is survived by his wife, children, and two brothers, Givi and Igor, and a sister, Liliya.
