Abdulaziz al-Sisi: The 6th President of Egypt
Born on November 19, 1954 in the humble district of Gamalia in Cairo, Abdulaziz al-Sisi spent his formative years in a religious family's home. As his military aspirations grew, he attended the Egyptian Military Academy and graduated in 1977.
Military Career
As an army officer, Sisi served in the Egyptian infantry and was stationed as a military attaché in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His strategic prowess was further honed through advanced training programs, culminating in a Master's degree in Strategic Sciences from the US Army War College in 2006. His academic thesis, which advocated for democracy in the Middle East, hinted at his progressive leanings while also acknowledging the influence of Islamists.
Role in the 2011 Egyptian Revolution
Foreseeing the possibility of a popular uprising against the Mubarak regime, Sisi urged the army to side with the people. As a member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) from February 2011, Sisi played a pivotal role in navigating the transition period.
Head of the Armed Forces
Appointed as head of the SCAF and Commander-in-Chief on August 12, 2012, Sisi became the youngest member of the council and took on the responsibilities of Minister of Defense and Military Production.
Orchestrator of the 2013 Coup
On July 3, 2013, Sisi led a military coup that ousted President Mohamed Morsi and suspended the constitution. Morsi was detained, and over 300 members of the Muslim Brotherhood were arrested in Cairo. Sisi then appointed Adly Mansour as the interim president.
Presidential Bid
Rumors of Sisi's presidential aspirations began circulating in 2013. With the promise to "submit to the will of the people," he garnered unprecedented popular support. Flags, posters, and merchandise bearing his image saturated the streets of Egypt. Youth organizations collected millions of signatures in favor of his nomination.
Presidency
Upon assuming the presidency, Sisi prioritized reducing government spending and addressing Egypt's energy crisis. To this end, fuel subsidies were eliminated, leading to rising food prices. He encouraged Egyptians to conserve energy and famously participated in a bike rally to promote cycling. Sisi also urged citizens to wake up early, called for government officials to start their workdays at 7 AM, and advocated for modesty and hard work.
Landmark Infrastructure Projects
During his presidency, Sisi has embarked on ambitious infrastructure projects, including the design and construction of a new national capital, a second Suez Canal, and extensive housing developments. The new Suez Canal, costing over $4 billion, runs parallel to the original channel but is half its length. It is intended to transform Egypt into a major industrial hub. The futuristic new capital, dubbed the "Second Dubai," is projected to cost $45 billion and ease the burden on overcrowded Cairo. Additionally, Sisi announced a massive housing program aimed at building one million apartments.
