Abdul Kader Bajammal: A Political Journey
Early Life and EducationAbdul Kader Bajammal was born on February 18, 1946, in Seiyun, Hadhramaut Province, Yemen. In 1974, he graduated from Cairo University in Egypt with a Bachelor's degree in Commerce.
Political Beginnings
Bajammal's political career began in 1966 within the Arab nationalist movement. In 1978, he became Deputy Secretary of the Central Committee of the Yemeni Socialist Party (YSP). The following year, he was appointed Chairman of the National Union of Students in Cairo.
Government Positions
From 1978 to 1980, Bajammal served as a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Aden. In 1980, he joined the Central Committee of the YSP and became Minister of Industry. In 1985, he was appointed Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Political Dissent and Imprisonment
In January 1986, Bajammal clashed with the YSP leadership over their policies. He accused them of being anti-socialist and anti-Soviet. As a result, he was sentenced to prison and served three years and three months. In 1989, he was released by order of the Democratic Unionist Party.
Post-Imprisonment Career
After his release, Bajammal served as a member of the Council of Representatives of the Republic until May 1990. He was also elected to the Yemeni General Committee the same year. In 1991, he became Chairman of the General Administration.
Government Leadership
In May 1994, Bajammal became Deputy Prime Minister of Yemen. He also held the position of Minister of Planning and Development until 1997. In May 1998, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Prime Minister
Bajammal served as the Prime Minister of Yemen from April 4, 2001, to April 2007. During his tenure, he focused on economic reforms and the fight against terrorism.
Later Positions
In late 2007, Bajammal was appointed Advisor to the President of Yemen and General Secretary of the General People's Congress (GPC). He continues to hold these positions today.
Environmental Recognition
In 2008, Bajammal was awarded the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Champions of the Earth Award for his achievements in preventing environmental degradation and his foresight in managing natural resources.
