Early Life and Military Career
Abdul Rashid Dostum was born in 1954 in Khojadukuh village, Juzjan Province, to an Uzbek father and a Turkmen mother. He rose through the ranks of the Afghan military, becoming a general in 1986. As a general, Dostum participated in the suppression of General Tanai's rebellion and fought alongside the government of Najibullah against the mujahideen.
Transition to the Opposition
In 1992, Dostum defected to the opposition and established the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan. He played a key role in the anti-Taliban "High Defense Council of Afghanistan" formed in 1996, recognizing the legitimacy of Rabbani's government.
Taliban Capture and Return to Power
In 1998, the Taliban captured Dostum's stronghold and his air force. However, following the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense in Hamid Karzai's interim government.
Post-Taliban Career
In 2005, Dostum survived an assassination attempt by a suicide bomber. He was then appointed Chief of Staff of the Afghan Armed Forces. He has held the position of Vice President of Afghanistan since 2014.
Personal Life and Significance
The name "Dostum" translates as "my friend" in Uzbek and Turkmen. In addition to his native Uzbek and Turkmen, Dostum is fluent in Pashto, Russian, and Dari. He is considered a prominent Uzbek leader and has played a significant role in Afghan politics and military affairs for decades.
