Abel Pacheco de la Espriella: A Visionary Statesman
Early Life and EducationAbel Pacheco de la Espriella was born on December 22, 1933, in San José, Costa Rica. The son of a banana farmer, he pursued a medical degree in psychiatry but never practiced medicine.
A Man of Many Talents
In 1970, Pacheco entered the television industry while continuing to teach medicine and engage in the sale of men's jewelry. His eclectic background laid the foundation for his future political career.
Political Rise
In 1998, Pacheco was elected to Costa Rica's unicameral parliament as a member of the Social Christian Unity Party. In 2001, he became the party's presidential candidate.
Presidential Triumph
Running on a platform of environmental stewardship, Pacheco won the 2002 presidential election with 58% of the vote. He vowed to create an "ecological state" and halt oil and gold exploration.
Environmental Champion
True to his word, Pacheco reduced oil exploration and transitioned Costa Rica to renewable energy sources, with 95% of its electricity now generated by environmentally friendly means. His greatest achievement was preserving the vast majority of the country in its natural state.
Anti-Corruption Crusader
Pacheco waged a relentless war against corruption, making Costa Rica the most attractive country for investment in the region. He also co-sponsored an international law banning human cloning, supported by US President George W. Bush.
Foreign Policy Stance
In foreign affairs, Pacheco opposed the Iraq War, stating that Costa Rican troops would never be deployed there. His environmental advocacy irked major oil corporations, including American companies.
Post-Presidential Life
Pacheco stepped down in 2006. He is an avid reader, songwriter, and family man. A devout Catholic, he respects all religions and welcomed the Dalai Lama to Costa Rica during his presidency.
