Early Life and Education

Abilio dos Santos Diniz was born on December 28, 1936, in São Paulo, Brazil. He earned a degree from Fundacao Getulio Vargas and holds an honorary Bachelor of Science and Arts.

Business Career

Абилио's father founded the Pao de Acucar company in 1948, which has since grown into one of Brazil's largest retailers, Companhia Brasileira de Distribuicao. Diniz currently serves as chairman of the company, which sells a wide range of products, including food, clothing, electronics, and home appliances. In 2002, Diniz sold a significant portion of his company to French company Casino for over $800 million. However, he remains in charge of the company, which continues to generate substantial profits.

Kidnapping and Rescue

In December 1989, Diniz was famously kidnapped by two highly trained individuals. He was held captive for six days in a small basement with only a tiny window for ventilation. Diniz was rescued by police, who arrested his two Canadian kidnappers during the raid. The kidnappers were initially sentenced to 28 years in prison, but an extensive campaign by the Canadian press resulted in their deportation to their home country for punishment.

Personal Life and Family

Today, Diniz continues to lead an active lifestyle, managing his business and participating in public affairs. Notably, Diniz is the father of former Formula One racing driver Pedro Diniz.
