Early Life and Education
Ze'ev Berlin was born in 1877 in Mogilev, Russia. He pursued his architectural education at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, graduating in 1911.
Career in Russia
During the early 1920s, Berlin worked as a staff architect in the 1st Petrograd Architectural Workshop. His exceptional skills earned him eleven prestigious awards in architectural competitions.
Repatriation to Palestine
In 1921, Berlin immigrated to Palestine, a significant step in his life. He established himself as a prominent figure in the emerging architectural landscape.
Establishment of the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts
Berlin played a pivotal role in founding the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in 1923. He headed the school's architectural department, nurturing young talent in the field.
Partnerships and Architectural Practice
In 1924, Berlin co-founded an architectural firm with Richard Pastovsky. They subsequently established the Association of Engineers and Architects in Palestine in 1925, an organization that later evolved into the Association of Engineers and Architects in Israel. Berlin collaborated with his son, Zeev, from 1931 to 1936.
Architectural Style and Legacy
Berlin's architectural style was characterized by the distinctive use of unplastered silicate brick, a prevalent building material in Tel Aviv. By leaving the brick exposed, he created a captivating interplay of abstract forms reminiscent of Expressionism and Art Deco. Notable examples of his work include his own home, the Mograbi Cinema, and the Haaretz newspaper building.
