Early Life and Education

Abram Matveevich Room was born in Vilnius, and his early years were spent pursuing an education in the field of medicine. From 1914 to 1917, he studied at the Petrograd Psychoneurological Institute. Subsequently, from 1917 to 1922, he attended the medical faculty of Saratov University.

Theatrical and Pedagogical Career

Alongside his medical studies, Room was actively involved in the arts. He taught and served as the rector of the Higher Workshops of Theatrical Art. Concurrently, he directed various theater productions. From 1923 onwards, he became the director of the Theater of Revolution in Moscow. Additionally, he held a teaching position at the Higher Pedagogical School of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee (VTsIK) in Moscow.

Film Career

In 1925, Room commenced his career in filmmaking as a teacher and associate professor at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). He made his directorial debut in 1927 with the film Tretia Meshchanskaja (Third Meshchanskaya). Throughout his filmmaking career, Room directed a diverse range of films, including historical dramas, war films, and adaptations of literary works.

Serebristaya Pyl (Silver Dust, 1953): A drama about the life of the Russian scientist Alexander Popov, who invented the radio.

Tsvety Zapozdalyie (Belated Flowers, 1969): A film based on the novel of the same name by Stepan Shchipachev, which tells the story of a war veteran struggling to adjust to post-war life.

Recognition and Legacy

In 1965, Room was awarded the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR. He passed away in Moscow. Room's contributions to the world of filmmaking and the arts have left a lasting legacy, inspiring generations of filmmakers and artists.
