Early Life and Education
Abu'l-Fadl Bayhaqi, a renowned Tajik historian, was born in approximately 995 (402 AH) in the village of Kharisabad, Beyhak district (present-day Sabzevar). He initially served in the diplomatic chancery (diwan-i risalat) of the Ghaznavids under his mentor Abu Nasr Mishkan. Bayhaqi, however, was not considered sufficiently experienced to succeed Mishkan and faced animosity from his preferred successor, Abu Sahl Zuzani.
Government Service
Despite requesting retirement, Sultan Mas'ud I (1030-1041) refused and granted Bayhaqi his favor. However, subsequent rulers were less amiable towards him, and he experienced significant adversity, which he later attributed as a factor in the composition of his historical work. Under Abd al-Rashid (1049-1053), Bayhaqi once again served in the diwan-i risalat.
Imprisonment and Liberation
In the latter part of Abd al-Rashid's reign, Bayhaqi was imprisoned for illegally using his official seal. After Toghrul-bek's brief usurpation, Bayhaqi was imprisoned again but was later freed upon the restoration of the previous dynasty. According to Abul-Hasan Bayhaqi, Bayhaqi retired from government service after the death of Sultan Farrukhzad in 1059 to dedicate himself to his historical work.
Historical Work: "Tarikh-i Bayhaqi"
Bayhaqi's magnum opus, the "Tarikh-i Bayhaqi," is a historical account in over 30 volumes, of which only a small portion covering the reign of Sultan Mas'ud I has survived. While the author himself may not have given the work a general title, it has been commonly referred to as such and published under that name.
The preserved sections comprise the last part of volume V, volumes VI-IX, and the beginning of volume X. The historical work offers a detailed and vivid account of the Ghaznavid court during Mas'ud's reign. Bayhaqi emphasized that his work was not a mere chronicle but rather a comprehensive description of the court's life and administration. It serves as an invaluable account of the Ghaznavid era and provides insights into the governance system established by Sebük-tegin and Mahmud.
Legacy
Bayhaqi's "Tarikh-i Bayhaqi" remains an essential source for understanding the history of the Ghaznavids and preceding dynasties. His work is also notable for its literary value and offers a unique perspective on the experiences and challenges faced by a Persian official in the medieval Islamic world.
Death and Recognition
Bayhaqi died in 1077 (470 AH) in Safar, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most renowned historians of the East. His historical work has been recognized for its meticulousness, accuracy, and vivid portrayal of the past.
