Biography of Achille Maramotti

Achille Maramotti was an Italian entrepreneur and the founder of the fashion house "Max Mara". Born on January 7, 1927, in Reggio Emilia, Italy, Maramotti grew up in a family of literary professors. However, his life took a turn when his father passed away when he was only 12 years old. Influenced by his mother Giulia, who was the head of a local tailoring school, Maramotti developed a passion for fashion and financial independence.

After studying in Rome, Maramotti obtained a law degree from Parma University. His career in the fashion industry began when he started working for a Swiss client who produced coats. Inspired by this experience, Maramotti decided to establish his own clothing business. He named his brand "Max Mara" after combining his surname with the name of a local bon vivant called Count Max, who was known for his impeccable appearance despite squandering his fortune in bars across Europe.

The Birth of Max Mara

In 1951, Maramotti launched Max Mara with just one coat and suit. His goal was to create ready-to-wear clothing at a time when Italian women either relied on tailors or visited Roman couturiers if they were wealthy enough. Maramotti was ahead of his time, aiming to establish a brand that did not depend on the personality of a single designer, unlike most famous Italian and French fashion houses. He wanted Max Mara to serve as an embodiment of true Italian taste and craftsmanship.

To ensure the success of his brand, Maramotti employed renowned designers like Karl Lagerfeld and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, who worked for him anonymously, giving Max Mara a classic and chic aesthetic. He also collaborated with internationally acclaimed photographers such as Sarah Moon and Richard Avedon for advertising campaigns, despite positioning the brand as democratic.

Max Mara's Success

Today, Max Mara is a giant conglomerate that owns thirty fashion brands. With over 2,200 stores worldwide, the company generates approximately one billion dollars in sales annually. In 1989, Maramotti handed over the management of the business to his children but continued to pursue a career in banking. His sons, Luigi and Ignazio, along with his daughter Ludovica, carry on his legacy. Luigi currently leads the company.

Maramotti was not only a successful entrepreneur but also an avid art collector. Throughout his life, he amassed a magnificent collection of contemporary artworks from Europe and America. According to his will, after his death on January 12, 2005, at his home in Albinea, Italy, at the age of 78, his vast art collection was made accessible to the public.
