Blessed Janusz Stępniak (1908-1942)
Blessed Janusz Stępniak was a Roman Catholic priest and martyr who lived during the 20th century. He is one of the 108 Blessed Polish Martyrs, beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 13, 1999.
Early Life and Ordination
Janusz Stępniak was born in 1908 in Poland. He completed his theological studies at the seminary in Łomża. On February 24, 1929, he was ordained a priest.
Pastoral Ministry
After his ordination, Stępniak served as a vicar in various Catholic parishes. He was dedicated to his pastoral duties, ministering to the needs of his parishioners.
Imprisonment and Martyrdom
On April 9, 1940, Stępniak approached the Gestapo to visit his arrested parish priest, the 83-year-old Fr. Klemens Sawicki. The Gestapo detained Stępniak and transported him to the Dachau concentration camp. He was assigned the registration number 22061.
During his imprisonment, Stępniak faced severe persecution and torture. He remained steadfast in his faith and supported his fellow inmates. On September 8, 1942, Stępniak was brutally murdered by a camp guard.
Beatification
On June 13, 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified Janusz Stępniak and other Polish martyrs who suffered during World War II. Stępniak's feast day in the Catholic Church is celebrated on June 12.
