Adam Douglas Driver was born on November 19, 1983, in Fontana, San Bernardino County, California, USA. His mother, Nancy Wright, is a paralegal, and his stepfather, Rodney G. Wright, is a Baptist minister. Adam's biological father, Joe Douglas Driver, was not involved in raising him and his older sister, April.

Adam attended Mishawaka High School in Mishawaka, where he began his journey in the acting profession. He participated in several theater productions and sang in the church choir. After graduating from high school, he joined the Marine Corps in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Adam served as a mortarman in the Marines for two years and eight months before being discharged due to a sternum fracture he sustained during a mountain biking accident.

Following his military service, Adam enrolled at the University of Indianapolis for a year before transferring to the Juilliard School to study drama. He admitted that it was challenging for him to adapt to the life of a student-actor after his time in the military, but he eventually graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
