Early Life and Education
Adam Kapanov was born on June 7, 1962, in Almaty, Kazakhstan. From 1969 to 1979, he attended Almaty School No. 25, where he specialized in French language. In 1984, he graduated from Kazakh State University (now KazNU) with a degree in Biology. He earned his Candidate of Biological Sciences degree in 1988.
Journalism and Literary Career
In 2006, Kapanov became a member of the Union of Journalists of Kazakhstan. He has authored numerous magazine and newspaper articles, as well as screenplays and ballet librettos. From 2002 to 2010, he served as Editor-in-Chief of "Season DM," the first Kazakhstani illustrated magazine for men.
Ballet Librettos and Choreography
Kapanov's libretto for the two-act ballet "Aerial Nomads" received the State Grant of the Ministry of Culture of Kazakhstan in 2008 as the best ballet production of the year. The story later became a book of the same name. In 2018, the State Opera Theater "Astana Opera" staged a one-act ballet, "Sounds of Time," based on Kapanov's libretto.
Documentary Filmmaking
Kapanov has directed and written several documentaries, including "Once, Twice, and...," "Enigma Zverev," "Remembering the Future," and "Toko Shinoda's Living Pictures." His 1999 film "Remembering the Future," about the environmental traditions of nomads, won the Audience Award at the "Young Cinema of Kazakhstan" festival.
Business and Social Responsibility
Kapanov co-founded "AlemVet" and "BioAr Alem," companies focused on animal health, zoo industry, and biological safety. These companies distribute products from global manufacturers and support scientific research and social projects related to animal welfare. He is also the author of the cultural and educational literary project "Clearly and Comprehensively," which aims to publish a series of popular encyclopedias for children about the interconnectedness of nature, culture, art, and society.
Philanthropy and Recognition
Kapanov has established various charitable initiatives, including the "Living Line" award for the best book illustrators at the "Open Eurasia" international literary festival. He also founded the "Architectural Vocation" award at Satpayev University in memory of his father, a renowned architect. In 2001, along with his wife, he established the "Talent" award for outstanding graduates of the A. Seleznev Choreographic School. Kapanov is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Almaty Choreographic School.
Exploration and Travel
Kapanov is an avid photographer, journalist, and traveler. He has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, visited the Everest Base Camp, sailed in amateur regattas, and participated in an automobile expedition in the Karakoram. He was also part of a group of journalists from Kazakhstan who covered the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
UNESCO and Recognition
Kapanov is a member of the Kazakhstan National Committee of the UNESCO international program "Man and the Biosphere." In recognition of his contributions, a butterfly species from Kazakhstan and a beetle species from Northwest China have been named after him.
Family
Kapanov's father, Adambek Kapanov, was a renowned architect; his mother, Alla Kapanova, was a history and philosophy teacher; his sister, Zhagidullina Aliya Adambekovna, is a professor and doctor of philological sciences; his wife, Gulnara Kapanova, is a former principal dancer and choreographer; their son, Anuar Kapanov, is a master of architecture and a designer; their daughter, Artis Kapanova, is a student at the Almaty Choreographic School.
