Early Life and Career
Adam Rich was born on October 12, 1968, to Francine and Rob Rich in a Jewish family. Growing up in Granada Hills, Los Angeles, Rich began his acting career at a young age. He rose to fame for his role as Nicholas Bradford, the youngest son on the popular television series "Eight Is Enough," which aired from 1977 to 1981. Rich's distinctive pageboy haircut earned him the affectionate nickname "America's Little Brother."
Transition to Adulthood
As Rich reached adolescence, he faced a number of challenges. At age 14, he experimented with marijuana, and by 17, in 1986, he dropped out of high school. In 1989, he nearly died from a Valium overdose. In 1991, he was arrested on charges of attempting to rob a pharmacy. In 1996, false news of Rich's death was published in a San Francisco magazine with his consent. In 2002, Rich was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI).
Personal Struggles
Rich struggled with drug addiction throughout his life, undergoing rehabilitation at least three times. In 2013, he began making occasional public appearances and pitching script ideas for television shows and films.
Acting Career
Rich's acting credits after "Eight Is Enough" included roles in the short-lived 1981 ABC series "Code Red" and the 1983 CBS sitcom "The Love Boat." He also made guest appearances on shows such as "CHiPs," "Fantasy Island," "The Six Million Dollar Man," "St. Elsewhere," and "Baywatch." Rich provided his voice to the animated series "Dungeons & Dragons" alongside his former "Eight Is Enough" co-star Willey Aames.
Later Years and Death
In his later years, Rich was involved in television commercials for Betty Crocker Snackin' Cake and Nabisco's Wheatsworth crackers. Sadly, on January 7, 2023, at the age of 54, Rich was found dead in his Los Angeles home. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office ruled his death an accidental fentanyl overdose.
