Education and Academic Career

Matthioli pursued his studies at the prestigious Charles University in Prague. As a professor, he ascended to the esteemed position of Head of the Philosophy Department. In 1593-1594, he served as the Rector of the university.

Medical Practice and Sacrifice

Matthioli decided to leave his academic post upon marriage, as professors were required to remain celibate. He transitioned to medical practice, providing care to his community. During the devastating plague outbreak of 1613, he courageously tended to the afflicted, ultimately contracting the disease and succumbing to it.

Literary Contributions

Matthioli's literary endeavors also left an indelible mark. His seminal work, "Three Books on Plants" (1592), gained widespread recognition in Latin. His treatise on pharmacy, "Establishing an Apothecary" (1592), became an indispensable guide for apothecarists and saw numerous reprints. His poetic compositions further showcased his versatility as an intellectual.
