Political Journey
Adama Barrow is the third President of Gambia, serving since 21 January 2017. Prior to politics, he worked as a real estate entrepreneur in London and The Gambia. In 2016, he became the United Democratic Party's candidate for president, opposing long-time incumbent Yahya Jammeh.
Electoral Victory and Transfer of Power Crisis
Barrow won the presidential election, but Jammeh initially refused to concede defeat. The situation escalated into a constitutional crisis, leading to Barrow's inauguration in the Gambian embassy in Dakar, Senegal, on 19 January 2017. Senegalese and Nigerian troops intervened to support Barrow's authority, and Jammeh eventually agreed to step down on 20 January and leave the country.
Governance
Upon assuming office, Barrow promised reforms to the security forces, press freedom, and investigations into the crimes of the previous regime. However, he has faced challenges, including protests by opposition groups demanding his resignation and a failed military coup attempt in 2022.
Personal Life
Barrow is a Sunni Muslim and a father of five children. He is an avid supporter of Arsenal Football Club in London.
