Early Life and EducationAdegoke Steve Colson was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in East Orange. He obtained his Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University and eventually returned to the East Coast after 10 years in Chicago.

On November 13, 1989, Newark proclaimed the day as Steve Colson Day, honoring his achievements, particularly the premiere of his composition "Greens, Rice, and a Rope" at the New Jersey Symphony Hall.
