New Guatemalan Minister of the Interior
President Óscar Berger of Guatemala has appointed Carlotta Samayoa de Torrebiarte as the new Minister of the Interior.
A Pioneering Woman
Samayoa de Torrebiarte is the first woman to hold the position in Guatemala's history. Her appointment is a significant step for gender equality in the country.
A Courageous Leader
President Berger praised Samayoa de Torrebiarte's courage in accepting the position. She expressed her strong belief in the importance of security for Guatemala.
A Respected Activist
Samayoa de Torrebiarte comes from a wealthy entrepreneurial family with deep roots in finance, industry, and commerce. Prior to her ministerial appointment, she was actively involved in civil society organizations. Notably, she co-founded the human rights group "Sorrowing Mothers" in response to the wave of kidnappings in the 1990s, which included a close relative. She also served on the Public Security Council.
Sports Administrator
Samayoa de Torrebiarte has a background in sports administration as well. She was the head of the Guatemalan Football Federation and the Cobán Imperial football club for three years.
Tackling Corruption
One of Samayoa de Torrebiarte's first missions will be to clean up corruption within the Ministry of the Interior. Her predecessor, Carlos Vielmann, faced a vote of no confidence from Congress over a scandal involving the murder of three Salvadoran parliamentarians in Guatemala.
