Biography of Adele Astaire
Adele Astaire, the older sister of Fred Astaire, was born Adele Marie Austerlitz in Omaha, Nebraska. She was born into a family of German Lutheran mother, Johanna, and Austrian Roman Catholic father, Frederic Emanuel Austerlitz.
Early Career
In 1905, Adele, along with her younger brother Fred, starred in a highly successful vaudeville production. This marked the beginning of the Astaires' stage career, and they soon became Broadway and London stage stars. Adele particularly enjoyed great popularity, although Fred also gained a fair share of fame. Their fan base even included members of the British royal family.
Marriage and Family
On May 9, 1932, Adele retired from the stage to marry Lord Charles Arthur Francis Cavendish. The couple moved to Lismore Castle in Ireland. They had three children, a daughter and twin sons, but unfortunately, all three passed away shortly after birth. After her marriage, Adele was given the title 'Lady Charles Cavendish,' and she was often referred to simply as 'Lady Charles.'
Second Marriage and Return to Show Business
On April 20, 1947, Adele married her second husband, Colonel Kingman Douglass, an investment specialist, U.S. Air Force officer, and CIA assistant director. As Fred Astaire rose to fame in Hollywood, Adele considered a return to show business. She visited Hollywood and even appeared in a musical revue in January 1936. However, her brother's reputation as a perfectionist overshadowed her own career aspirations, and she ultimately did not appear in any films.
Later Life and Death
In 1937, Adele began working in England alongside Jack Buchanan and Maurice Chevalier. However, after just two days, she left the film project, and she did not appear in any films. Adele Astaire passed away in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 84.
