ADO: A Journey Through Rock and Acoustic Harmony
The Genesis of ADOIn the quaint town of Kolomna, nestled amidst the countryside of Moscow, the seeds of ADO were sown in the late 1980s. Songwriter Andrey Gorokhov embarked on a musical journey, driven by a desire to capture his compositions on tape. Fate brought him together with Valery Anikhin, a fellow student at the prestigious Bauman Moscow State Technical University. Together, they embarked on a creative partnership that would shape the destiny of ADO.
Homemade Tapes and Critical Acclaim
Working tirelessly in Gorokhov's home studio, the duo recorded a series of mini-albums. The first of these, "Night Soup," found its way to Leningrad, where it fell into the hands of renowned writer and music critic Anatoly Naumovich Zhitinsky. Impressed by its raw yet captivating sound, Zhitinsky published a glowing review in the influential music journal "Aurora." This endorsement marked a pivotal moment for ADO, propelling them into the spotlight and garnering them recognition from the likes of Boris Grebenshchikov, frontman of the legendary rock band Aquarium.
Aquarium Connections and Creative Collaborations
Through Grebenshchikov's patronage, ADO began collaborating with Aquarium members. Ivan Voropaev, an exceptional violinist, joined the group, bringing a new level of musicality. Vitaly Levkovsky also lent his talents on the violin, while Dmitry Yunkin strengthened the group's foundation on bass. This expanded lineup recorded the full-length album "Sound Recording," which showcased ADO's maturing sound.
Acoustic Breakthrough and Live Success
As ADO's reputation grew, they transitioned to regular live performances. The band's acoustic sets captivated audiences at festivals like "Rock-Acoustic-90" in Cherepovets. These performances not only garnered them a loyal fan base but also led to a successful tour of Uzbekistan and Ukraine.
The Vinyl Debut and National Expansion
In 1991, ADO made their vinyl debut with the release of "Stop Me, Night" on the prestigious Melodiya record label. This marked a significant step in their career and solidified their status as a rising force in the Soviet rock scene. The album's release also allowed them to reach a wider audience and embark on a nationwide tour.
Evolution and Transitional Period
As ADO continued to evolve, the group experienced several lineup changes. Voropaev and Levkovsky departed, making way for new additions such as Nikolai "Kondrat" Ignatchev on percussion and Tatiana Korobochkina on violin. These shifts reflected the band's desire to find the optimal musical chemistry.
The "Golden Nuts" and Beyond
In 1993, ADO released the album "Golden Nuts," which featured collaborations with notable musicians. The album's mix of acoustic and electric elements further expanded their musical horizons. During this period, the group also toured extensively, performing in cities across Russia and beyond.
A New Era and FM Airplay
The arrival of keyboardist Yuri Smoljakov marked a new era for ADO. The band's sound became more dynamic, incorporating a more percussive element. The 1996 album "Behave Yourself" showcased this evolution, with several tracks receiving FM airplay. The success of the title track was further boosted by a memorable claymation music video.
"Alphabet" and the Shift to the Electric
ADO's subsequent album, "Alphabet," saw them fully embrace an electric sound. Recorded in the modern studios of the suburb of Zelenograd, the album featured a tight rhythm section and further experimentation with instrumentation.
