Alfredo Carricaberry: The Basque-Argentine Football Legend

Early Life and Club Career

Alfredo Carricaberry, an Argentine footballer with Basque heritage, began his career with the small amateur club Floresta in Buenos Aires. He later played for the youth team of the Estudiantiles Porteño club. In 1919, Carricaberry joined San Lorenzo, making his senior debut on March 25, 1920, against Racing. Despite scoring in the match, his goal was not enough to prevent San Lorenzo from losing 2-1.

In 1923, Carricaberry won his first Argentine championship title with San Lorenzo and became the league's top scorer. He repeated this success in 1924 and 1927, establishing himself as one of the most prolific strikers of the time. However, in 1927, Carricaberry suffered a serious injury during a match, being stabbed in a brawl between players and fans. He retired from football in 1930.

Return to Football and Retirement

With the advent of the professional era in Argentine football, Carricaberry decided to return to the game and joined Huracán. However, he scored only one goal during his season with the club and retired again. His third attempt at a professional football career proved even less successful, as he joined Argentinos Juniors in 1937 but played only nine matches without scoring, effectively ending his career.

International Career

Carricaberry made his debut for the Argentina national team on November 19, 1922, in a friendly against Uruguay in Montevideo. One of his most famous matches came in 1927, when Argentina defeated the mighty Real Madrid 3-2 in a friendly. Carricaberry scored two goals in that match.

In 1927, Carricaberry and the national team participated in the South American Championship. He became the tournament's top scorer alongside Uruguayan Roberto Figueroa, scoring three goals, including two against Bolivia. His contributions helped Argentina win the championship, winning all three of their matches.

The following year, Carricaberry represented Argentina at the 1928 Olympics. He played five matches, including both finals, where Argentina lost to Uruguay and settled for the silver medal.
