Hector Castro is a former Uruguayan football player and coach. He was known for his achievements both as a player and a coach in the sport.
The Injury and Nickname
At the age of 13, Hector Castro suffered an accident with an electric saw that resulted in the amputation of his right hand. This earned him the nickname "El manco" (The One-Handed). Despite this setback, Castro did not let it discourage him from pursuing his passion for football.
Achievements as a Player
Castro had an illustrious career as a football player. He was part of the Uruguay national team that won the Olympic gold medal in 1928. He also played a crucial role in the Uruguay national team's victory in the 1930 FIFA World Cup, becoming the only player in the history of football to win a World Cup without a hand. Castro even scored the first goal for the Uruguay national team in the World Cup tournaments. In addition to his international success, he won the South American Championship twice and three national championships with his club team, "Nacional," from 1924 to 1936.
Transition to Coaching
After retiring as a player, Castro turned his attention to coaching. Under his leadership, "Nacional" won the national championship five times. In 1939, Castro served as an assistant coach when "Nacional" once again became the country's champion.
