Brazilian and American Cinematographer
A renowned cinematographer with Brazilian and American roots, he studied at the National School of Fine Arts. He is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers and the Brazilian Society of Cinematographers. Since 1970, he has resided in the United States.
Early Career and Notable Collaborations
His early work includes "O Dragão da Maldade contra o Santo Guerreiro (Antonio das Mortes)" (1969) by Glauber Rocha, "La tierra prometida" (1971) by Miguel Littin, and "Hot Times" (1974) by Jim McBride. In the 1980s, he collaborated with Agnes Varda on "Documenteur" (1981) and with Bruno Barreto on "Além da Paixão" (1985).
American Success and Critical Acclaim
Moving to Hollywood, he gained recognition for his work in McBride's films, including "The Big Easy" (1986), "Great Balls of Fire!" (1989), "The Wrong Man" (1993), "Uncovered" (1994), and "The Informant" (1997). He also collaborated with Pedro Almodóvar on "La flor de mi secreto" (1995) and "Carne Trêmula" (1997).
International Recognition and Awards
His collaboration with Almodóvar on "Todo sobre mi madre" (1999) earned him a nomination for the Goya Award and a nomination for the Golden Frog at the Łódź International Film Festival of Cinematographers. He also received the Grand Prize at the Gramado Film Festival for his work on "Cinco Dias, Cinco Noites" (1996) by José Fonseca e Costa.

In the 2000s, he worked on films such as "Ghost World" (2001) by Terry Zwigoff, "Deus & À Brasileiro" (2003) by Carlos Diegues, "Dark Water" (2005) by Walter Salles, "The Queen" (2005) by Stephen Frears, "Love in the Time of Cholera" (2006) by Mike Newell, and "Nights in Rodanthe" (2008). His recent collaborations have included "The Watcher" (2000) and "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" (2014) by Francis Lawrence.
