Early Career
Afonso started his football career at Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro. In 2002, he joined Swedish club Örgryte, before moving to Malmö in 2004.
Heerenveen and Dutch Success
During the 2006 Swedish season, Heerenveen signed Afonso for a record €4.5 million. He became the league's second-highest goalscorer for two consecutive years. In 2007, he broke the Heerenveen club record with 34 goals, finishing second in the race for the Golden Boot.
Record-Breaking Transfer to Middlesbrough
In August 2007, Afonso almost joined Saturn, but the deal fell through. On October 7, he scored a record-breaking seven goals against Heracles. On January 31, 2008, Afonso transferred to Middlesbrough for a British record £12 million. AZ Alkmaar challenged the move, claiming a prior agreement, but the Dutch football federation ruled against them.
Premier League Debut
Afonso made his Premier League debut on February 7, 2008. He scored his first two goals for Middlesbrough on April 6, against Manchester United.
Career in Qatar
Since 2009, Afonso has played in the Qatar Stars League. He became Al Rayyan's top scorer in the 2010 AFC Cup.
International Career
In 2007, Afonso was called up to the Brazilian national team. He made his debut in a friendly against England and later played in the Copa América, winning the tournament. He scored his first international goal on September 12, 2007, against Mexico.
